Backyard Trampolines
are becoming increasingly popular. Each year sales in Western
Canada continue to increase. There has been considerable controversy
over the safety of Trampolines, and their place in a residential
setting. The College of Physicians & Surgeons of Alberta does
not recommend the purchase of Trampolines for home recreational
use. The Alberta Gymnastics Federation considers it important
for parents to recognize the risks involved in the use of trampolines,
and to ensure that proper rules for safety are followed. Without
a focus on safety, the trampoline can turn your backyard into
a hazardous play zone.
Setting
Up Safely:
- The trampoline
should be set up on a level surface, away from patios, fences,
garages, and any overhead objects.
- Make sure
there is nothing stacked under the trampoline.
- Check to
make sure that all springs are attached and that there are no
missing or damaged springs.
- The pads
should be at least 1 1/2" thick and contain a high density
(firm) etha foam filler. Replace pads that are soft. The pads
should be securely attached and completely cover the springs.
- Never let
anyone use the trampoline if the bed is wet, or if the bed is
ripped, frayed or has holes.

Play Safe!
Trampoline Safety Rules:
- As with any
physical activity, a proper warm-up and stretch of all major muscle
groups should occur before you bounce.
- Always supervise
the trampoline when in use. Do not think of the trampoline as
an unsupervised babysitter.
- Use footwear
with good grip regardless of the type of bed. Bare feet may work
well on polypropylene beds (black) however proper footwear can
prevent many common injuries.
- Only one
person should use trampolines at a time.
- Do not allow
your children to perform difficult manoeuvres that involve flipping
or going upside down. These skills should be performed with skilled
instruction and in a proper training facility.
- Users should
only bounce to a height at which they are able to maintain control.
- Getting on
and off the trampoline should be done in a controlled fashion.
To dismount: always stop in the middle, step to the side, sit
down and lower yourself to the ground.
- Individuals
under the influence of alcohol or drugs should never use trampolines.
Please
Remember:
- Trampolines
should only be used by individuals, children and adults, who will
respect these basic rules, and recognize that there is a danger
involved in Trampolining.
- When your
trampoline is unsupervised and is not being used, take steps to
disable or cover your trampoline. According to Alberta law you
may be liable to damages incurred to both visitors and trespassers.
- The Alberta
Gymnastics Federation does not condone the use of unsupervised
trampolines by untrained/unqualified individuals. If you would
like more information on how to use and how to properly maintain
your backyard trampoline, please call the Alberta Gymnastics Federation
